What we do
Drop-ins, workshops, exhibitions and more.
We do it all using our unique approach to sumo.
- Beginner friendly and advanced learningAt our core, we host our fundamentals drop-in, which covers the basics to sumo wrestling. From shiko to a breakdown of easy-to-digest techniques and learning on the dohyo, we cover it all. For our advanced learners, special classes focus on building individualized skills.
- A space for all bodiesWhen we say all bodies, we mean it. We welcome all sizes, genders and experiences in our spaces. A different take on traditional sport culture, we're continuously striving to make better spaces for our growing community.
- Creating community over competitionWhile we host the annual sumo exhibition at Powell Street Festival and our basho, we like to think of these spaces as anti-sumo sumo. Our traditions are rooted in rice and good sportsmanship. We acknowledge that our approach is a little different from conventional competitions, but hey, that's what makes us happy.
- Honouring legacy and traditionSumo Sundays would not be possible without those who came before us. We are grateful to have our path paved by the former Sumo Fun Club and for ongoing support from the Powell Street Festival Society. While we pride ourselves on our spin on sumo, we continue to honour legacy and tradition through spirit, rice,
- An authentic experienceSumo Sundays embodies the lived experiences of our organizers, volunteers and ever-growing community. From creating space for queer and trans folks to making sumo accessible to gender diverse folks and people of the global majority, every experience and relationship aims to come from a place of authenticity.
